What is Methi Puri?

Methi puri is a crispy & deep fried Indian bread or tortilla which tastes very good. It can work as a tea time snack or as a breakfast. Do you know why we call it a methi puri? Well, that is because it's main ingredient is methi or fenugreek in english. You can easily find people enjoying it in festival seasons of diwali or holi. Methi ki puri tastes even more good when you make it with makki ka atta (maize flour) & boiled potatoes. Methi poori is a unique snack having a combo of savory and bitter taste. It is totally up to you either you want to make a flat puri or a puffed one. You can have methi puri recipe in breakfast with curd/yogurt, tea and chutney.

About This Recipe

Here you'll see that I made it with maize flour to make it a bit more healthy. You can also make it with wheat flour or all purpose flour. Then I put in some fresh fenugreek leaves. You can use kasuri methi in place of it too. Methi leaves or fenugreek leaves are used to make many Indian dishes. This special one is a very enjoyable dish. You might have heard about other dishes of Fenugreek but here, this one is totally different. These methi leaves are very good for health and therefore you should include them in your diet. Fenugreek is rich in antioxidants, iron, magnesium which will make your bones strong, maintains blood sugar level and controls diabetes. It also helps in better digestion and is very good for heart. Recipe Ingredients

First of all, check if you have all the necessary ingredients for this recipe. Pay attention to the quantities!
  • Makki ka Atta (maize flour) :- 2 cups
  • Potato :- 2 boiled and mashed
  • Methi :- 1 cup chopped
  • Coriander Leaves :- 1/2 cup chopped
  • Garlic Paste :- 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger Paste :- 1/2 tsp
  • Onion Paste :- 1 tsp
  • Red Chili Powder :- 1 tsp
  • Salt :- 1/2 tsp
  • Ajwain (Carom Seeds) :- 1/2 tsp
  • Hing (Asafoetida) :- 1/4 tsp
  • Oil :- 1 tbs + frying

Recipe Instructions

Next, follow the steps to finalize your dish and finally be able to enjoy it!
  1. Firstly, take a bowl and add makki atta (maize flour) in it. Then add in the chopped methi (fenugreek leaves), boiled & mashed potatoes and chopped coriander leaves.

  2. Now for the spiciness, add 1 teaspoon Red chili powder. Then add 1/2 a teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of Ajwain and 1/4 teaspoon of Hing.

  3. Next, add 1/2 teaspoon of ginger paste and garlic paste. Add 1 teaspoon of Onion paste and 1 tablespoon Oil.

  4. Mix it well and make smooth dough while adding lukewarm water in it. Rest the dough for ten minutes. By the time, heat some oil in a kadhai (frying pan). Knead the dough again. Now, grease your palm with oil and take some portion of the dough. Roll it with your hands & make a flat disk shaped Puri.

  5. Repeat the step and make other puris as well. Deep fry them while turning their sides simultaneously. Take them out when their color gets lovely golden brown. Serve them hot with chutney and tea...
